The BVJ-S took third place in this year’s “Tabula Rasa” campaign in Neuwied and was delighted to receive prize money of 400 euros.

The award ceremony took place last Tuesday and was attended by Ms. Raabe and two dedicated BVJ-S students. The award was presented personally by District Administrator Achim Hallerbach, who recognized the special achievements of the participants.

“Tabula Rasa” is an annual campaign organized by Neuwied Waste Management in which schools take part in a waste collection campaign to protect the environment in their immediate surroundings.

Almost 80 pupils from the BVJ-S took part in this competition. The six classes and their teachers collected a considerable amount of garbage on the school grounds and in the surrounding area, including very special items such as shopping carts, an old table football game, car tires, clothing and even engine oil. The students were very surprised that there are people who simply dispose of such dangerous waste in the forest, even though environmental protection is so important in Germany.

The school community at BBS Alice Salomon is proud of this success and is looking forward to using the prize money for environmentally friendly projects or activities in the BVJ-S. Congratulations to everyone involved for this great achievement!

“Design a personal business card of yourself using natural materials” was the assignment for the prospective educators in the new lower school. In perfect weather, the students hiked to the banks of the Rhine in Linz and let their imaginations run wild, producing 27 individual results. Each pupil used this map to share something personal about themselves: a character trait, a favorite vacation destination or simply something that is important to them in life.

Afterwards, small groups of four pupils formed to create a group artwork from natural materials.

The students were unanimous in their feedback about how amazed they were at the ideas of others and how much fun they had developing their own creativity.

The young people had already dealt intensively with the topic in advance. Working in groups, they produced well thought-out and creative posters with communication codes for the internet, on which the class recorded their own values and rules for respectful behavior in chats, on social media or in online games.

The conclusion of the class: words have power – even digitally. Every individual can help to ensure that the internet is a safe and respectful place.

My name is Amjad and I’ve been in Germany for two years. I came here with my family. I am 18 years old and come from Syria.

Everything was new to me at the beginning. I didn’t speak the language well. Everything was difficult. But I learned a lot. Now I speak German better. I go to school. I want to do an apprenticeship later. I have made friends. We often speak German. That’s good for me.

I live in a small town called Rheinbrohl. I like that. I often see people in the supermarket or in the park. Many people are friendly. I missed my family and friends in Syria. But now I feel better. Germany has also become my home.

My name is Mohammad. I’ve been in Germany for a year and a half. My home country is Syria. I live in Neuwied in a shared flat. My flatmates are also from Syria and we communicate in Arabic. We often cook Syrian dishes, but I still can’t cook like my mother. I miss many dishes that I can’t cook myself. I am currently a language student and soon I will have a B1 exam. The German language is difficult, but you have to learn German to understand people and integrate into society.

My best experience was when I tried the train for the first time. I was surprised about the waste separation: in Germany you have to separate the waste, but in Syria nobody separates the waste. I also didn’t understand the weather. It feels like it rains all year round. I’m still new to Germany and I need a lot of time to learn everything.

My name is Satar, I’ve been in Germany for a year and I’m from Afghanistan. I live in Neuwied. I often go to the gym in my free time. I enjoy it and it helps me to stay healthy.

During my first year in Germany, I missed my family a lot and the food. Iranian food tastes very different here. My best experience was a trip to Munich with my language school. The language was very difficult at the beginning. I didn’t understand many words, especially when I went shopping or to the doctor. Forms and letters were also difficult. I was surprised that many things are different in Germany. For example, I am allowed to go to school and do an apprenticeship. The buses are also usually on time.

I learned a lot of new things during my first year in Germany. I not only learned German, but also how to live alone, and I found new joy.

My name is Muhannad. I come from Syria, from the city of Homs. I am 16 years old and will be 17 in two months. I have been in Germany for a year and a half. Germany is a beautiful country, but I miss my siblings who are in Turkey. I live in Neuwied. Neuwied is a small town, but it’s beautiful. I go to school in this town. I attend the BVJ-S class there and I really enjoy it. The hardest thing for me in Germany was the language, but now I can almost speak at B1 level.

I was surprised that everyone in Germany has the same rights. It was different in Turkey. I had the feeling that foreigners there didn’t have the same rights – especially at school. I learned a lot of new things during my first year in Germany. One of them was waste separation. I can speak Arabic and Turkish fluently and have a basic knowledge of English. I’m currently learning German.
My hobbies are playing soccer, reading manga and watching anime. I don’t want to do anything special this summer vacation – I want to stay at home and watch anime.

I would love to have a pet. Unfortunately, I don’t have one at the moment. If I had a pet, it would be a cat. Next school year I would like to go to the BVJ if I pass the B1 exam this year.

My name is Maksim and I am 17 years old. I came to Germany 3.5 years ago. I originally come from Mariupol in Ukraine.

I came to Germany because my country is going through difficult times.
During my first year in Germany, I missed my cat very much. I like the nature in Germany. However, I also have some bad memories: I got scared of snakes and spiders several times during my internship as a forester. I found it difficult to learn a new language at first, as I was doing distance learning in Ukraine at the same time.

What else was difficult for me? Once I wanted to buy crab chips and found out that it was difficult to get them. This fact made me very sad.

My name is Roman and I come from Ukraine, but now I live in Germany. I am almost eighteen years old. In 2022, the first year of my life in Germany, communication was difficult. I couldn’t talk to my classmates. I missed my city because I had a cat there.

I was surprised that many things are different in Germany, but here I learned to be more open-minded and here I learned discipline. My best experience was my first visit to the zoo. I saw a black bear there for the first time.

This was the unanimous feedback from the visitors who gathered at BBS Alice Salomon on Thursday, 27.03.25, as part of the Linz Association’s Week of Participation.

HBFS23b organized the morning under the motto Together instead of alone – connecting young and old. The aim was to bring different generations together and encourage interaction.

The class offered various activities for this purpose: Visitors were able to paint cups or talk about intergenerational values with the help of impulse cards. The whole event was accompanied by coffee and cake. 15 older citizens from the Linz district accepted the invitation.

Many interesting and enriching discussions took place between 9 and 11 am. The learners gained new perspectives and reconsidered our own point of view on some topics. Numerous creative and colorful mugs were also produced.

To sum up, it was an all-round successful morning that not only created many wonderful memories, but also made numerous new contacts. The class is delighted that the project was so well received and was able to make a small contribution to reducing loneliness in society.

Once again a successful project that came about as a result of cooperation between the two subjects of responsibility and religion.

The students of BF1EV24a are working on the topic of identity as part of their ethics course and visited the Seelentiefen photo exhibition at the ASD day care center in Linz on Tuesday, 08.10.24. The young people used the comfortably designed rooms of the day care center to engage intensively with the 19 black and white photographs and the stories behind them. Reflecting on different life paths, the pupils became creative and took away a number of things for their own personal development.

Many thanks to the ASD team, including the dog Freya, who gave us 17 visitors a warm welcome and especially to Philipp Jäschke, who gave us an understanding of the important work in day care in addition to the interesting exhibition.

The 17 students from the Alice Salomon Vocational School 1 Health/Nursing course at BBS Alice Salomon in Linz enjoyed an unforgettable class trip to the vibrant German capital from June 11 to 14. They were supervised by dedicated teachers Claudia Scheidt and Holger Waldecker.

The trip began with a fascinating city tour on the first day, during which the students experienced the imposing Brandenburg Gate and other famous sights of Berlin up close. But that was just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
On the second day, the students embarked on a digital scavenger hunt along the old GDR wall, which was not only exciting but also educational. But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the opening of the European Championship fan mile at the Brandenburg Gate, where the group was able to attend live and even enjoy a performance by the famous rapper Luciano.

The third day brought another surprise: the students had the unique opportunity to visit the German Bundestag and attend a public plenary session. Special thanks go to Mr. Erwin Rüddel, Member of the Bundestag, who made this unique experience possible.

The trip was rounded off with a visit to the legendary student disco Matrix in Berlin, where the group celebrated and reminisced about their shared experiences.
“This class trip was simply fantastic and we will all remember it for a long time to come,” enthuses pupil Paul Kaba. “A big thank you to our teachers and everyone who made this unforgettable trip possible.”
The trip to Berlin was undoubtedly a very special experience for the pupils and the two class leaders of the Alice Salomon School, which not only broadened their horizons but also created unforgettable moments that will stay with them for a long time to come.

On Thursday, 25.04.2024, the time had come – the BBS Alice Salomon school community celebrated its first spring festival on the topic of “Education for Sustainable Development”. On this day, all of the school’s classes and students presented the projects they had carried out on the topic of “sustainability” over the course of the year.

The projects were based on the 17 Global Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015:

Whether it was about reducing food waste and throwing food away (“Too good for the garbage can”), sustainable table decorations, the topic of “poverty in Germany” or freedom, peace and justice – every single project was designed to make the world a little bit better. Insect hotels were made and various gardening projects took place, bags were sewn from old clothes and visitors could dare to walk on a Da Vinci bridge. “Sustainability in care” and the “removal of barriers in social spaces” were addressed, the importance of high-quality education was discussed, play equipment made from willow was on display, experiments were carried out in the daycare center taking into account selected ESD aspects and fair toys were shown. Many classes designed raised beds, which now beautify the Neuwied school site in front of the B wing. A sheep and two lambs were also present, Edda with her twins, who familiarized visitors to the festival with species-appropriate animal husbandry.

Politicians were also represented: The Lord Mayor of Neuwied, Jan Einig, and the 1st Alderman of the City of Linz, Helmut Muthers, took the opportunity to see the commitment of the students at BBS Alice Salomon for themselves.

In a small stage program, Nevio from HBF S 23 b gave an impressive speech and a passionate plea for diversity. And Simon from HBF S 23 c conducted an interview with Mr. Dötsch, the chairman of the Linzer Tafel. The program was accompanied musically by Marie Krings, Melvin Gerolstein and Janosch Modrack from the FSS, so that the overall atmosphere was excellent.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary commitment of the BNE-AG: Iradet Bajrami, Marie-Therese Syllwasschy, Anne Gasper, Alisa Albiez, Irina Spenst, Annette Simon and especially Marco Gilles, who really did his best over the last few days to make this festival possible. THANK YOU to all of you.

A big thank you also to all the students: the event showed that sustainability is an important topic for the younger generation and our students all contributed with a lot of creativity and ideas.

How can you create an interesting word puzzle with children using pictures, an iPad and a simple app? And how could you use an iPad as a tool with children to create short animated films about children’s stories? These were just two of the questions that the 2nd-year part-time vocational school for social work investigated and tested with their own experiments as part of a workshop on “Media practice for daycare centers” run by “Medien und Bildung RLP” under the direction of Birgid Dinges and Daniel Zils.

In a first practical test, the task was to create a photo puzzle with the PicCollage app in small groups and then present the resulting puzzles to the group. The creative media design options offered by the app were first introduced: Photo collages, photo puzzles, fake pictures, profiles. All of this can be produced very easily with little effort and little technical knowledge using tablets. Very different and tricky puzzles were created in no time at all, which were solved together and with a lot of fun.

In addition to the productive use of tablets, the participants discussed the fundamental question of to what extent and under what conditions it makes sense to work with children using media. The participants had quite controversial views on this, ranging from skeptically cautious to euphorically welcoming. The speaker put forward a number of arguments that at least helped them to critically question their own point of view: the use of media must always be accompanied by pedagogical support; rules are needed for the use of technical devices; digital media are just one of many options and of course do not replace the work of pedagogical professionals. She emphasized that media competence ultimately only arises through active action, through which media can only be understood in a reflective way. Teamwork is particularly important and beneficial here. Viewed soberly and realistically, children’s worlds are media worlds that are shaped by their parents. In this respect, educational and advisory tasks for educational professionals arise in both directions: towards the children, but also towards and in cooperation with the parents.

In a short digression, the two speakers also offered an insight into a completely new area of media education: what worlds are opening up for educational work through newly emerging forms of so-called artificial intelligence using the examples of ChatGPD, deepl, Midjourney, Leonardo.ai and others? What is the relationship between reality and disinformation when working with these tools, or the relationship between the fascination of new possibilities and the need to protect against misuse? At this point, urgent reference was made to the large area of data protection in daycare centers and the resulting legal consequences, and corresponding support services offered by the state were highlighted.

The varied and entertaining workshop concluded with the task of using the Puppet Pals app to create their own story as puppet theater. This app can be used to underlay digital theater with texts that are previously considered and then assigned to generated or photographed figures as spoken text. The fact that this results in highly imaginative, creative and constantly new stories is what makes this creative work so appealing. The participants were completely fascinated by what was created in a short space of time and was presented for everyone’s enjoyment.

In a concluding reflection, the participants were able to look at future steps that they see in relation to the use of digital media in their respective institutions. The speakers encouraged the participants to simply try out the first steps and to gain further supporters in order to ideally prepare for the development of a media education concept.
