Almost 80 pupils from the BVJS took part in the Neuwied district administration’s waste management competition “Tabula Rasa” today. The aim of the campaign is to collect garbage together and thus make our environment cleaner.

The six classes and their teachers collected a considerable amount of garbage on the school grounds and in the surrounding area, including very special items such as shopping carts, an old table football game, car tires, clothing and even engine oil.

The students were very surprised that there are people who simply dispose of such dangerous waste in the forest, even though environmental protection is so important in Germany.

For the BVJS it’s time to keep our fingers crossed – if we are the school that collects the most garbage, we can look forward to prize money.

On Wednesday, 07.05.25, the school building at the Linz school site was full: 200 visitors from all over Rhineland-Palatinate attended the 4th ESD Conference RLP, which was organized under the auspices of the Pädagogisches Landesinstitut and hosted at our school.

The event was opened in the Linz town hall: Jan Hendrik Winter, ESD officer from the Ministry of Education, welcomed the guests from the schools and extracurricular learning locations, the Ministry of the Environment, the State Institute of Education, the guests from Greenpeace Germany, representatives of the ADD Trier and Dr. Sundermann, the head of department from the Ministry of Education.

Mayor Helmut Muthers and principal Doris Schulte-Schwering were also given the opportunity to give a short welcome speech.

Ms. Schulte-Schwering introduced the school, as many visitors from the general education sector were not familiar with the vocational school system. She referred to the school’s mission statement and quoted that the humanistic view of man can move mountains when working with people. She also addressed the second part of the mission statement: “… and take responsibility in school, work, society and the environment.” Since it was founded 125 years ago, BBS Alice Salomon has always been committed to taking responsibility, so to speak, and there is now even a subject called “Responsibility and Commitment” at the school. And last year, our school finally dared to apply for certification as an ESD school – successfully, as we will see today.

Doris Schulte-Schwering took the opportunity to point out a few things that our students and their teachers had prepared for visitors in the foyer:

“When you come in, you immediately see a colorful raised bed with herbs, which the students of the language vocational preparation year have prepared for you. There are messages on the raised bed, some in German and some in their native languages.”

Or: EMMA – Just do it. A project by curative education nurses on accessibility in social spaces.
Also: competition in home economics: “Rethinking consumption”
And: art postcards that were created in class and are for sale. The proceeds will go towards the next ESD project.”

In his speech, Helmut Muthers emphasized the good cooperation between the city of Linz and BBS Alice Salomon: “I love the implementation of joint projects where you don’t know at the beginning what will come out at the end,” said Mr. Muthers. And he hit the core of the attitude at the BBS. He was thrilled by the sight of the packed city hall at today’s ESD symposium, as the topic of “sustainability” is also an important concern for the city of Linz and the city is very committed in this area.

This was followed by two specialist presentations. Dr. Johanna Kranz and Dr. Ulrich Matthes from the Competence Center for Climate Change Impacts used vivid images and studies to explain that the increasing heat caused by climate change will affect people’s health and everyday life in educational institutions, and that we need to act now, draw up heat action plans and adaptation measures, but at the same time strengthen constructive hope among young people.

And then came the ceremonial highlight of the event in the Stadthalle: the awarding of the new ESD schools and learning locations for sustainability. And BBS Alice Salomon was there. The representatives of the ESD working group, Marco Gilles, Anne Gasper, Iradet Bajrami, Alisa Krämer, Marie-Therese Syllwasschy and Annette Simon, proudly accepted the certificate. This has only been possible thanks to their tireless commitment over the past few years. Ms. Schulte-Schwering thanks them for this and at the same time emphasizes that this is a commitment and a mandate to continue working with young people on the SDGs and sustainability issues.

Then it was down to the school, where a wonderful lunch and Alice’s Cafe awaited the visitors. Of course, there were also numerous workshops and a market of opportunities. The offer was overwhelming, many conversations and inspirations took place, networks were formed and deepened.

Many guests gave our school the feedback that they felt extremely well looked after here and could sense the positive spirit and atmosphere. We would therefore like to end this article with a very special thank you to our school’s home economics department. Pupils from BF 1a and BF 1c as well as some pupils from BF 1b and their teachers Birgit Kessel, Gertrud Buslay, Helene Vlajnic and Kathrin Birmanns made a significant contribution to the success of this wonderful event with their good catering, beautiful decorations and great service.

On Thursday, 25.04.2024, the time had come – the BBS Alice Salomon school community celebrated its first spring festival on the topic of “Education for Sustainable Development”. On this day, all of the school’s classes and students presented the projects they had carried out on the topic of “sustainability” over the course of the year.

The projects were based on the 17 Global Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015:

Whether it was about reducing food waste and throwing food away (“Too good for the garbage can”), sustainable table decorations, the topic of “poverty in Germany” or freedom, peace and justice – every single project was designed to make the world a little bit better. Insect hotels were made and various gardening projects took place, bags were sewn from old clothes and visitors could dare to walk on a Da Vinci bridge. “Sustainability in care” and the “removal of barriers in social spaces” were addressed, the importance of high-quality education was discussed, play equipment made from willow was on display, experiments were carried out in the daycare center taking into account selected ESD aspects and fair toys were shown. Many classes designed raised beds, which now beautify the Neuwied school site in front of the B wing. A sheep and two lambs were also present, Edda with her twins, who familiarized visitors to the festival with species-appropriate animal husbandry.

Politicians were also represented: The Lord Mayor of Neuwied, Jan Einig, and the 1st Alderman of the City of Linz, Helmut Muthers, took the opportunity to see the commitment of the students at BBS Alice Salomon for themselves.

In a small stage program, Nevio from HBF S 23 b gave an impressive speech and a passionate plea for diversity. And Simon from HBF S 23 c conducted an interview with Mr. Dötsch, the chairman of the Linzer Tafel. The program was accompanied musically by Marie Krings, Melvin Gerolstein and Janosch Modrack from the FSS, so that the overall atmosphere was excellent.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary commitment of the BNE-AG: Iradet Bajrami, Marie-Therese Syllwasschy, Anne Gasper, Alisa Albiez, Irina Spenst, Annette Simon and especially Marco Gilles, who really did his best over the last few days to make this festival possible. A big thank you also to all the students: the event showed that sustainability is an important topic for the younger generation and our students all contributed with a lot of creativity and ideas.

On Monday, July 8, 2024, Irina Spenst (ASS teacher and member of the ESD working group) and Lisa Klüber (ASS student representative) received the “Sustainable School” award from Education Minister Hubig and a representative of the state student council in Mainz. This means that BBS Alice Salomon’s extensive application was successful and Mainz has also recognized that our school is serious about sustainability. The diverse activities and projects of the ASS were convincingly presented in the application. “Focusing on a sustainable future worth living is one of the most important educational tasks of our time,” says Headmistress Doris Schulte-Schwering. “And I am proud that the entire school community is working on this and is committed to it.”

Sustainability in everyday life

As part of our class project “Sustainability”, we go in search of clues as to how we can incorporate sustainability into our everyday lives.

We are working on the project as part of learning module 14 “Regional-specific module”. In this learning module, we were able to decide together as a class group from the outset which topic we would like to work on as a project. Due to the topicality of the subject, we opted for sustainability.
Because we are the educators of tomorrow – and see it as our task to set an example of a sustainable way of life for children.

Wow, pride spreads among us. We grin at each other with satisfaction and shake the last of the soil off our hands, pants, T-shirts and shovels. Harald smiles contentedly, Heidi sleeps through this great moment in the car. Despite this incredible number.

But from the beginning:

We are budding social assistants from the HBFS 20A class in Neuwied who took part in the Rhineland-Palatinate state youth engagement competition and won. We developed, discussed and rejected many different ideas and ultimately decided how we wanted to work for the good of our community: “We put down roots – youth forges ahead!”.

The aim of our commitment was to make an active contribution to the reforestation of a section of forest that was completely destroyed by the bark beetle last year.

For two days from 9 am to 3 pm, we removed the top layer of humus, dug holes with our spades, removed stubborn roots and blackberry hedges, knelt in the soil, carefully planted the tree seedlings and filled the holes with soil. To protect the delicate branches, a plant guard had to be attached around each individual plant. But take a look at the pictures for yourself.

He was happy to see that young people see the problems of our time and are tackling them. He explains that this is now also “… our forest and we can watch it grow.”

As a class, we not only found it very satisfying to do something important and meaningful, but also to finally be able to do something together, laugh, eat pizza and feel the sun on our faces all day.

Of course, we also got to know the older dog Heidi, who was always keeping an eye on us.

The HBFS 20A and Mrs. Holle

“Tabula Rasa – is that German?” was the pupils’ first question when they were introduced to the Neuwied district administration’s waste management campaign. The aim of the campaign was to collect garbage together and thus make our home cleaner. The two classes of the BVJ-S of the BBS Alice Salomon in Neuwied collected more than 150 kg of garbage on July 13, 2022 – and that was just on the grounds around the school. One student reports: “It’s unbelievable what we found – even an old car tire and a bicycle without wheels.”

The classes agreed that collecting garbage was even fun and reported that since then they have been much more careful when walking through the city and the countryside and are no longer afraid to bend down, pick up garbage and take it to the nearest garbage can.

Their efforts have now been rewarded. With the amount of garbage they collected, they took third place in the garbage collection campaign and won prize money of 500 euros for a sustainable project. The BVJS would like to use the money to go on excursions that bring the pupils even closer to the topics of environmental protection and recycling.
